Firefox Mobile 1.0 Burrows Onto Nokia N900s

Firefox Mobile crawled into its first pockets last night, going live on Maemo5. The mobile version retains the full awesomeness of the Awesome Bar and includes WeaveSync for keeping tabs, passwords, and bookmarks straight across desktop and mobile versions.

The Nokia N900 sports a lot of impressive unofficial achievements on its resume, like dual-booting (sort of) and playing Starcraft and Duke Nukem 3D. Now it gets the benefit of Firefox's first o-fficial mobile version.

As mentioned above it comes with the Awesome Bar and synchronization capabilities as well as tabs, location-aware browsing and some add-ons. Flash support is experimental but can be turned on in the settings.

Firefox Mobile 1.0 is currently available for download. You can find out more at Mozilla's Firefox Mobile page

Twitter Cuts Feature on Site Over Security Flaw

Twitter has temporarily disabled one of the features on its website after a security researcher warned of a programming flaw that left the login credentials of its users vulnerable to hackers.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said in an email that the company had temporarily cut off access to a feature that lets users display Twitter updates on their websites by using Flash technology. "Our team has disabled the Flash widget while we look into the problem," Stone said. Mike Bailey, a senior security analyst with Foreground Security of Orlando, Florida, said that the problem exploits a widely known vulnerability in Adobe Systems Inc's Flash programming language. Adobe has told programmers how to address the vulnerability, which was first discovered in 2006, Bailey added, but noted the operators of many websites have failed to respond to those warnings. The microblogging site's huge popularity has made it a prime target for hackers looking to spread malicious software to Twitter's millions of users. "As simple as the attack is, I've been finding them all over the place," Bailey said. Officials with Adobe declined to comment. A hacker last month briefly hijacked the Twitter site and redirected it to one that claimed to represent a group calling itself the Iranian Cyber Army. That high-profile attack - by a perpetrator who stole credentials to the account that Twitter uses to route its traffic -- did not compromise credentials of any Twitter users. Bailey said his analysis of the Twitter site showed that it could have been vulnerable to attacks for more than a year, but that it was impossible to know whether hackers had actually exploited the Adobe flaw. He is scheduled to discuss his research on the Twitter flaw at the Black Hat DC security research conference in Washington, which begins on Feb. 2.

Google Inc founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin plan to sell about 10 million of the company's shares over the next five years, the company said in a regulatory filing on Friday.

Google Wakes Up – Https by Default for all Gmail Users

gmail-securityhttp://www.kitnakuch.com
There is certain amount of laxity when it comes to completeness or readiness of a product or a service. I am talking about Google, the big daddy of Internet. Be it Feedburner or Google wave or even Orkut, Google seems to be lethargic in fixing the bugs. Same with Gmail as well. All these are high quality products, mind you – leaders in their area of use, but still far from being perfect.
Especially Gmail, possibly the most popular free email solution on the web currently, has had lots of complaints with respect to security. Let us get it straight, no product is fool-proof, no email solution is hack-proof, but I simply fail to understand why it took so much time for Google to enable https by default to all Gmail users? It’s been more than 20 months since we wrote a post tipping our readers to Always Use HTTPS to make Gmail more secure. A month later Mike Perry demoed a utility called Gmail Hacking tool which showed how easy it is to break Gmail’s security.

Better late than never. Google is now rolling out default HTTPS for everyone. The total HTTPS connection will just ensure that none of the conversation between the GMail servers and your PC will be unencrypted. It must be understood that HTTP is not a secured protocol in its own. But HTTPS which is a Secured form of HTTP protocol encrypts your Data while it is transferred from your Client Machine to the Web Server. So if any Third-party malicious user interrupts in your connection then the encrypted data remains secure and cannot be recovered.
The whole thing is a direct result of the attempted hacking of some Gmail accounts in China. It’s good that Google takes its security seriously, and they’ve made that more clear by announcing that all Gmail accounts will now default to the encrypted version of the service.

Tomizone Enables Tata Indicom Broadband Users toSetup Wi-Fi Hotspots

Tata Communications Internet Services Limited (TCISL) and Tomizone have announced a partnership deal by which TCISL will use Tomizone proprietary software to usher in a Wi-Fi revolution in India. Auckland, New Zealand headquartered Tomizone is a leading Wi-Fi hotspot and metro Wi-Fi zone solutions provider across Australasia, India and China.
This service enables any Tata Indicom Broadband customer to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot. The software and user authentication systems have been designed in line with the Wi-Fi security guidelines mandated by the DoT.
The partnership would allow Tata Indicom broadband customers to set up Wi-Fi hotspots at their premises instantly. Besides his or her personal usage, the customer will also get an opportunity to utilize their unused bandwidth by offering it to others, say neighbors. In return, they will get credit of internet surfing time on their account, thus subsidizing the cost of their Broadband connection.

“There is a need for higher penetration of Wi-Fi hotspots where laptop and Wi-Fi enabled device users can connect to the internet. Currently there are less than 1000 Wi-Fi hotspots in India with Tata Indicom Wi-Fi having a share of over 50%. As a result of this partnership, the number of such hotspots can grow manifold in a much shorter time and also give retail consumers to take part in this exciting new business opportunity.” Prateek Pashine, COO, TCISL said.
India has among the lowest penetration of broadband in the world at about 0.6 per cent with 6.62 million subscribers as on June 2009. India is expected to take a leap in penetration with a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and IMRB Broadband Report forecasting 214 million subscribers by 2014. The partnership with Tomizone is a step in bridging the gap in broadband penetration in India.
Tomizone offers its customers’ low cost Wi-Fi Internet access through an interconnected network using the best built for purpose Wi-Fi Hotspot authentication and management system available, which will help in increasing Broadband penetration in any country.
Prateek further added, “Today TCISL is already the largest Wi-Fi player in the country. And with this association, we will usher in a Wi-Fi revolution that can potentially create thousands of hotspots and enable lakhs of users to access blistering internet on Wi-Fi technology in a far more ubiquitous manner than today.

Chinese Used 'Flaws' in Microsoft Explorer to Hack Google

The Chinese managed to hack Google accounts of human activists and many businesses thanks to flaws in Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) browser, according to reports Friday.

Google has threatened to close its operations and offices in China after hacking and "phishing'' attempts to break into gmail accounts of US, China and Europe based Chinese human rights activists.

The company, which agreed to censor of Google.cn at its launch in 2006, has also said it is "no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn.''

Reports Friday quoted security researcher McAfee Inc. as saying that Chinese cyber attacks on Google accounts were engineered by using an unknown flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser.

According to McAfee, 'phishers' fooled users into clicking on a link to a website. This website then secretly downloaded malicious software onto their computers. The spyware allowed the hackers to take remote control of the computers.

Microsoft has already admitted in its blog that IE browser might be used by hackers to remotely spy on infected computers. It is likely to unveil a software update for the browser.

"We need to take all cyber attacks, not just this one, seriously,'' Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer told CNBC.

"We have a whole team of people that responds in very real time to any report that it may have something to do with our software, which we don't know yet,'' he said.

Google has said that "these accounts have not been accessed through any security breach at Google, but most likely via phishing scams or malware placed on the users' computers.''

It says it will soon hold discussions the Chinese soon whether it can operate an unfiltered search engine. "We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China," Google warned in a blog Tuesday.

BMW, Mercedes to Use Intel Atom-chips

Technology company Intel Corp will receive some additional business from the German car industry and heavy machinery sector in the coming years, its head of German operations said.

Premium German car makers BMW and Mercedes will be using Intel's microprocessor chips in information and entertainment systems in their automobiles from 2012, Hannes Schwaderer told Reuters in an interview on Friday. "We have also won new customers in the durable goods industry such as Bosch Rexroth", he added. German producers of televisions and settop boxes would also soon implement the new generation of Atom-chips - which are designed for use in netbooks and mobile devices. "In 2009 we have basically seen no revenue from that but that will start to change already in 2010," Schwaderer added. Intel's classic business with chips for personal computers and servers will continue to dominate in the immediate future. Last year, business in Germany remained stable thanks to solid demand for laptops, Schwaderer said, adding the consumer division compensated for a decline in corporate business. Schwaderer said he expected Intel's new line of notebooks and desktops to be launched soon in Germany, adding: "We are counting on profitable growth." Intel, based in Santa Clara, California, reported stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings on Thursday and gave a bullish margin outlook on higher prices and firm demand for server chips.

Although only a small number of SIM cards were impacted at the time, this release means the N900 is now fully compatible with 3 SIM cards.
Mail for Exchange also sees an update which will it allow it to work with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. This should bring the possibility of Exchange integration to a much broader group of users.

The update will be available to users in a staged roll out across the world over the next 24 hours.
Once you’ve installed the update, let us have your feedback here, as the team are watching and really keen to know what you think (as are we!).

Audi Displayed Front 225 Roadster & Sportback Concept Car @ Auto Expo 2010!!

Audi, the German luxury car manufacturer, showcased an outstanding display at the 10th Auto Expo in New Delhi. To commemorate the centenary of the brand, Audi's display included the heritage Audi Front 225 Roadster, the Audi India product range and the Audi Sportback Concept car. The Audi range was presented by Mr. Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG Marketing and Sales, and Mr. Benoit Tiers, Managing Director, Audi India.
"Audi has shown exceptional promise since we began our India operations. We have grown from strength to strength in every facet of the business. Audi India will continue to play a pivotal role in the worldwide growth strategy of AUDI AG. The Audi Sportback Concept car, which we have displayed at the Auto Expo, effectively demonstrates Audi's future design vocabulary. We will continue to bring latest models from Audi to India. This is part of our commitment to the Indian customer," commented Mr. Peter Schwarzenbauer.

The two international show cars and the current Audi India product range reflect the past, present and the future glory of AUDI AG. The Audi Sportback concept show car is now rolling up to the starting line with a dual mission: As suggested by the name, it symbolizes the Sportback principle in its purest form in the combination of elegance, sportiness and variability.

The technology of the Audi Sportback concept is markedly futuristic. With its pronounced coupé-like silhouette and large rear hatch, the 4.95 m long (16.24 ft), 1.93 m wide (6.33 ft) and only 1.40 m high (4.59 ft) vehicle is boldly progressive for the luxury class. Power is provided by the world’s cleanest diesel technology: the 3.0-liter V6 TDI clean diesel almost completely eliminates nitrogen oxides. And numerous measures to ensure top efficiency mean that the Audi Sportback concept is expected to achieve impressive fuel consumption figures of 5.9 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers.
Audi India has been instrumental in creating new benchmarks in terms of sales and service thereby establishing Audi as a manufacturer of progressive, sophisticated and technically superior luxury cars. Audi introduced "Audi Top Assist", a 24x7 Road Side Assistance Program in India, earlier this year. The increasing familiarity and wider acceptance of the brand across the country is reflected in the robust growth that Audi has witnessed in terms of sales and expansion since start of operations in India.

"We have successfully exceeded our projected sales targets for two consecutive years and have strategically created a niche in the Indian automobile industry. Audi India immensely benefits from the state-of-art-infrastructure, modernised working processes, large pool of skilled personnel and favourable logistical conditions that AUDI AG provides. We will continue to provide unmatched quality 3/4 to our customers in India, reflective of our philosophy of 'Vorsprung durch Technik'," said Mr. Benoit Tiers.

In 2009 Audi India registered a 58 percent growth, a remarkable achievement in a difficult year. This success was attained through the launch of - the new Audi A6, the Audi Q5, the new Audi Q7, introduction of three new engines to the existing range of Audi A4 and expansion of its footprint across India through new dealership openings in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Kochi.

The brand celebrates "100 years of Audi", a journey of the brand's tradition, innovation, commitment, explorations, passion, successes and new ideas. To commemorate this special occasion, Audi India has several new initiatives planned for 2010, which were set in motion at the10th Auto Expo.

The company announced the introduction of Audi Q7 4.2 TDI; the most powerful engine in its class. The 4.2 TDI engine joins the highly successful and popular Audi Q7 family in India. The company also announced a Limited Edition offer on Audi A6 – the highest selling luxury sedan worldwide. The Audi A6 2.7 TDI will now be available at an attractive price of Rs. 37,00,000 onwards (ex-showroom Mumbai) for a limited period. Audi India also announced start of production of the Audi Q5, its highly successful SUV, at its group production facility at Aurangabad, and plans to launch an extended warranty program, later this month.

The international Audi stand concept will give auto enthusiasts an opportunity to experience the entire Audi product range available in India comprising the Audi A4, the new Audi A6, the Audi A8, the Audi Q5, the new Audi Q7, the Audi TT and the super sports car Audi R8, together with the two international exhibits - Audi Sportback Concept and Audi 225 Roadster at the Audi stand. The entire Audi model range is available at eight showrooms across the country: in Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kochi. Early 2010 will witness the opening of new showrooms in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai (West), Jaipur, Chennai, Ludhiana. Further developments include Lucknow, Coimbatore and Nagpur.

We have compiled a list of the most anticipated gadgets and technologies of 2010, which are expected to make it big this year.

Google's Android phone

Google has invited the media to attend "an Android press gathering", at its Mountain View, California campus on 5 January 2010. The invitation comes amidst mounting excitment about the search giant's rumored plans to release a Google-branded smartphone. Called the One, the phone was reportedly designed inside Google and would be sold, at least initially, without being subsidised by a wireless partner.

The phone will run on Google's open source software Android. It is being manufactured by HTC, which also built the first Android phone to hit the market, T-Mobile's G1 phone. According to technology blog Gizmodo, the One will be sold unlocked on a Google website for $530.

10-inch PC from Apple

Apple is planning to launch a PC this year. Though Apple never confirmed the existence of the device, speculation has been for months. Reports are surfacing that the will have a 10.1-inch multi-touch LCD screen similar to that of Apple's iPhone.

It has an "amazing user interface" and also supports 3D graphics, virtual keyboard, video conferencing, e-books, Internet and other functions. The has a front camera for video chats, making it a first of the sort for any Apple handheld device.

According to an Oppenheimer research note, the Apple will pose a to Amazon's e-book reader since Apple is apparently also negotiating a deal with publishers to get them on-board their new with a 70/30 revenue split. The typical Kindle/publisher split, Oppenheimer says, is 50/50. Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected to launch the device in January. It will apparently be offered at a price lower than $1000.

It is designed to be used by both professionals and everyday consumers in a range of applications, from coaches clocking baseball pitch speeds, to athletes seeking improved performance, to NASCAR racing fans looking to their viewing experience and become part of the action.

Dual-screen LCD laptop

An Italian company named V12 Design is working on a dual-screen LCD laptop called the Canova. According to Laptopmag, V12 developed its design four years ago and is currently working on a second generation version with a US manufacturer.

The gadget will support multi-touch input and will have a software keyboard that will appear on the screen. A microphone would also be built into the design for voice commands. The gadget is expected to be launched in 2010.

bada mobile phone

Samsung Electronics is likely to launch the first bada-powered mobile phone in the first of 2010. Samsung is calling bada-based phones a "smartphone for everyone", with support for motion sensors, face detection and location-based services.

The company is also keen to create an apps eco system around the OS and will allow apps to control the dialler, send messages and access contact lists. With its new OS (bada), the company is trying to grab a piece of the pie already dominated by Nokia's Symbian, Apple's iPhone, Google's Android and RIM's Blackberry.

Made In India Android-based PC
Ink is all set to launch a high-tech IT product fully developed in India, at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2010. The touchscreen uses Google's Android, Nvidia's Tegra processor chips and a power-saving display screen from Pixel Qi.

To be precise, it has 48 hours of standby, eight hours of high-definition video and 16 hours of Wi-Fi Internet surfing time."

These may not be the best gadgets for 2010, but you never know which one takes the world by storm and turns out to be the hot seller.

For Google, China remains closed commercially, too!!!

Since launching in 2006, Google’s China search engine has struggled to attract users. Homegrown competitor Baidu enjoys twice the US firm's market share.

A Chinese Google user carries bouquets of flowers that he wanted to present to the Google team at its China headquarters in Beijing on Wednesday.

    Beijing
As news spread on the Chinese Internet that Google is threatening to close its Chinese websitebecause of censorship, a band of Twitterers organized a bold show of solidarity.

At lunchtime, a group of them arrived at Google’s headquarters bearing flowers, in token of their support for the search-engine giant's stand against government control of the Web.
“Respect Google for: 1) Doing what you should, even if it is not easy. 2) Protecting your heart and your clients,” read one tweet.
“There is clearly a constituency that appreciates the message that Google is sending, that it finds the Chinese government’s attitude to the Internet and censorship unacceptable,” says Rebecca MacKinnon, who is writing a book about the Chinese Web.
It was a rare display of sympathy for a company that has struggled against official and commercial pressure to make Google.cn a success in the four years since it launched.
The Chinese language search engine had a 31 percent share of the market in the third quarter of 2009, the last period for which figures are available, according to the Chinese Internet consultancy firm Analysys. The market leader, homegrown Baidu, had more than double that, with 64 percent.

    Criticism from authorities

Google.cn has been winning a growing number of users, despite coming under fire from the authorities.
Three times last year the government-run China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center issued public complaints that searches on Google.cn could turn up pornographic sites, recommending that “the relevant legal enforcement departments punish the company according to the law.”
Users have also sometimes found that when they enter a search term on Google.cn, they are mysteriously redirected to competitor Baidu.
Google’s main problem, however, appears to have been in overcoming the first-mover advantage that Baidu enjoys as the first Chinese-language search engine. Many users got used to Baidu, and saw no reason to switch.
Baidu also attracted a lot of traffic by offering free music downloads; Google.cn felt obliged to follow suit last year.
Though Google accepted censorship in order to set up its search engine in China, the company has not offered any services involving personal or confidential data, which could easily be stolen from Chinese-based servers.
There is no Chinese Gmail, for example, and Google has not extended user-generated content services into China, which could allow surveillance of participants.
If Google cannot reach an agreement with the Chinese government to run an unfiltered search engine here – as is likely – and makes good on its threat to close its Chinese business, the international Google.com website will still be available, unless the authorities block it, as they have in the past.
Few Chinese Internet users, however, speak enough English for the main site to be an attractive alternative.

CoPilot Live on Google Nexus One gets the green light

CoPilot Live CoPilot Live for Android has been one of the biggest hits of 2009 on the Android Market, with more than 200,00 downloads, but ALK hasn’t just slapped it on the shelf and left it to gather dust. The navigation company’s updating all the time, and now, the mapping app will support the Google Nexus One too.

Although many Android apps runs across a range of different Google blowers, the different specs and screen resolutions often mean new phones break support for third party apps, especially complex satnav apps. But ALK, which only just updated CoPilove Live for full support on the Motorola Milestone and HTC Tattoo, has now confirmed that it works on the Google Nexus One’s lavish 3.7-inch display too.

Google Nexus One hands-on photo overload!

Of course, we’d love to have an official, working and free Google Maps Navigation app for the UK, but we’ll take a satnav app with preloaded maps for a little over a score while we wait.

    Out Now | £25.99 | CoPilot Live

Bing to be default search on HP computers

Microsoft has extended its deal with Hewlett-Packard to make Bing the default search engine on HP PCs worldwide.

According to reports, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Wednesday that the agreement will also make Microsoft's MSN site the default homepage on HP PCs.

Previously, the partnership only covered consumer PCs sold in the United States and Canada, and was effective for 12 months. The extended deal will now cover both business and consumer PCs worldwide, and will span three years.

This deal could help boost visibility for Microsoft's relatively new search engine, launched in May last year.

According to ComScore statistics, Bing has been gaining market share since its debut, capturing 10.3 percent of the search market in November last year. Yahoo dropped to 17.5 percent from 18 percent, while Google maintained its lion's share of 65 percent.

The search giant has helped maintain its visibility by paying for Google to be the default search engine within Mozilla's Firefox browser. In 2006, the amount paid out accounted for US$56 million of Mozilla's US$66 million revenue.

Dickson Seow, Google's Southeast Asia head of corporate communications, said in a response to ZDNet Asia: "We welcome competition that helps deliver useful information to users and expands user choice. Having competitors is a huge benefit to us and everyone in the search space--it makes us all work harder, and at the end of the day our users benefit from that."

    Tata DOCOMO launches DOCOMICS

Using the service, customers can view the content frame by frame, besides downloading comics from a WAP site through the application.

Tata DOCCOMO users will now be able to avail popular Marvel Comics and Japanese Manga using this service, a press release said.

MUMBAI: Tata Teleservices' GSM brand' Tata DOCOMO has partnered with NTT DOCOMO to launch DOCOMICS, a service that alllows users to read mobile
    comics through a viewer application.

DOCOMICS is a continuation to Tata DOCOMO's recently announced industry first m-Comics service, wherein customers could read full comics books, along with special effects, it said.

"It is a significant achievement of the collaboration between NTT DOCOMO and TTSL in order to develop and introduce enhanced services and technologies into Indian market," NTT DOCOMO's Executive Advisor, Global Business Division, Murat O Karadeniz, said.

As an introductory offer, Tata DOCOMO customers will be charged only Rs 15 per comic chapter and there will be no data charges in home network, the release said.

"We are confident that this format will rapidly gain popularity and further strengthen the brand," Tata DOCOMO-Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra), General Manager (Marketing), Gandhi Balsubramaniam, said.

Tata Teleservices offers private telecom services and operates across over 3.5-lakhs towns and villages pan-India.

Tata DOCOMO is a joint venture between Tata Teleservices Limited and Japanese telecom giant NTT DOCOMO.

Is Google's Nexus One phone good?

The Nexus One phone from Google

At first glance, the Nexus One doesn't look like a revolution waiting to happen. In fact, Google's much heralded rival to the Apple iPhone looks remarkably similar to almost every high-end mobile phone released in the last two years: big black screen with small button at the bottom. But as soon as you switch on the handset and swipe your finger across the screen to unlock it, it is clear this is more than just another also-ran.

The first thing that strikes you is how incredibly bright and clear the screen is. It's a 3.7in, low-power, "organic LED" screen that doesn't need backlighting and allows deep, clear blacks and vivid colours. In terms of visibility, it's streets ahead of the competition: a gang of Nexus One users waving their prized gadgets in the air could probably send a signal into space.

The second thing that leaps at your eyeballs is the animated background. Whether you've got rippling pools of water or computerised lights zipping around the screen, the constant movement whenever you're using the phone breathes a strange sort of life into this static object.

Above all, though, you are stepping through a portal into Google's world. On first use, the phone prompts you to log into your Google account – within seconds it has synchronised your email, web searches, contacts book and any other information you happen to keep with the company. Convenient for you, but also – thanks to the constant stream of data being fed back to California – handy for Google. You're now a satellite-tracked, walking, talking, web-surfing recruit into Google's informationalised army.

Despite this nagging feeling that you've stepped into the pages of Nineteen Eighty-Four, becoming one of Google's disciples boasts some impressive benefits. Browsing the web is fast, the powerful five-megapixel camera-phone with built-in flash should make the all-important business of taking good photos a doddle. The really futuristic extra, though, is "voice search". On other handsets, including the iPhone, this addition seems like a gimmick – hey, what kind of dimwit talks to their phone? – but the accuracy and speed of the Nexus One makes it feels like something from Star Trek. I asked for "toy shops in San Francisco" and it found me a (Google) map of local toy shops in a couple of seconds. Combine this with the phone's simplified "in-car mode" display and ability to speak turn-by-turn directions, and it spells goodbye to satnav.

The downsides are its appearance – sleek but bland, made from a dull, metallic-looking plastic – and the small, rubber trackball that sits under your thumb, which feels like an awkward afterthought (although it does glow in different colours to let you know when the phone is charging or connected via Bluetooth).

But a big "miss" is the feature that makes the iPhone so simple to use: multi-touch. While the Nexus One's single-finger prodding works well enough, there's none of the pinching action to zoom into maps and photographs that makes the iPhone feel so advanced, nor its realistic-feel friction. Google's on-screen keyboard feels cramped, too, and won't completely satisfy text freaks and heavy emailers.

Also missing is the depth of downloadable applications that have turned the iPhone into something much more like a mini-computer. There are plenty of programs available through the Android Market (and Google is, of course, encouraging armies of coders to feverishly build more), but there is still nowhere near the volume you can get for Apple's gizmo.

Then, of course, there's the price. Salivating British gadget fans can buy one now from Google's US shop – without a sim card or contract – for £330, and Vodafone is scrambling to make it available on a contract here for significantly less. But even then, it's unlikely to come cheap.

What ultimately justifies the price, Google argues, is the phone's sheer power. And the thing certainly is fast, with the memory and processing guts equivalent to a top-of-the-range laptop from eight or nine years ago.

But will it beat the iPhone? This debut model falls short of the smooth and totally intuitive design that Apple came up with. Google prides itself on being a company of engineers, and – despite all its bells and whistles – the Nexus One still leaves behind an aftertaste of nerdiness.
