Audi, the German luxury car manufacturer, showcased an outstanding display at the 10th Auto Expo in New Delhi. To commemorate the centenary of the brand, Audi's display included the heritage Audi Front 225 Roadster, the Audi India product range and the Audi Sportback Concept car. The Audi range was presented by Mr. Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG Marketing and Sales, and Mr. Benoit Tiers, Managing Director, Audi India.
"Audi has shown exceptional promise since we began our India operations. We have grown from strength to strength in every facet of the business. Audi India will continue to play a pivotal role in the worldwide growth strategy of AUDI AG. The Audi Sportback Concept car, which we have displayed at the Auto Expo, effectively demonstrates Audi's future design vocabulary. We will continue to bring latest models from Audi to India. This is part of our commitment to the Indian customer," commented Mr. Peter Schwarzenbauer.
The two international show cars and the current Audi India product range reflect the past, present and the future glory of AUDI AG. The Audi Sportback concept show car is now rolling up to the starting line with a dual mission: As suggested by the name, it symbolizes the Sportback principle in its purest form in the combination of elegance, sportiness and variability.
The technology of the Audi Sportback concept is markedly futuristic. With its pronounced coupé-like silhouette and large rear hatch, the 4.95 m long (16.24 ft), 1.93 m wide (6.33 ft) and only 1.40 m high (4.59 ft) vehicle is boldly progressive for the luxury class. Power is provided by the world’s cleanest diesel technology: the 3.0-liter V6 TDI clean diesel almost completely eliminates nitrogen oxides. And numerous measures to ensure top efficiency mean that the Audi Sportback concept is expected to achieve impressive fuel consumption figures of 5.9 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers.
Audi India has been instrumental in creating new benchmarks in terms of sales and service thereby establishing Audi as a manufacturer of progressive, sophisticated and technically superior luxury cars. Audi introduced "Audi Top Assist", a 24x7 Road Side Assistance Program in India, earlier this year. The increasing familiarity and wider acceptance of the brand across the country is reflected in the robust growth that Audi has witnessed in terms of sales and expansion since start of operations in India.
"We have successfully exceeded our projected sales targets for two consecutive years and have strategically created a niche in the Indian automobile industry. Audi India immensely benefits from the state-of-art-infrastructure, modernised working processes, large pool of skilled personnel and favourable logistical conditions that AUDI AG provides. We will continue to provide unmatched quality 3/4 to our customers in India, reflective of our philosophy of 'Vorsprung durch Technik'," said Mr. Benoit Tiers.
In 2009 Audi India registered a 58 percent growth, a remarkable achievement in a difficult year. This success was attained through the launch of - the new Audi A6, the Audi Q5, the new Audi Q7, introduction of three new engines to the existing range of Audi A4 and expansion of its footprint across India through new dealership openings in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Kochi.
The brand celebrates "100 years of Audi", a journey of the brand's tradition, innovation, commitment, explorations, passion, successes and new ideas. To commemorate this special occasion, Audi India has several new initiatives planned for 2010, which were set in motion at the10th Auto Expo.
The company announced the introduction of Audi Q7 4.2 TDI; the most powerful engine in its class. The 4.2 TDI engine joins the highly successful and popular Audi Q7 family in India. The company also announced a Limited Edition offer on Audi A6 – the highest selling luxury sedan worldwide. The Audi A6 2.7 TDI will now be available at an attractive price of Rs. 37,00,000 onwards (ex-showroom Mumbai) for a limited period. Audi India also announced start of production of the Audi Q5, its highly successful SUV, at its group production facility at Aurangabad, and plans to launch an extended warranty program, later this month.
The international Audi stand concept will give auto enthusiasts an opportunity to experience the entire Audi product range available in India comprising the Audi A4, the new Audi A6, the Audi A8, the Audi Q5, the new Audi Q7, the Audi TT and the super sports car Audi R8, together with the two international exhibits - Audi Sportback Concept and Audi 225 Roadster at the Audi stand. The entire Audi model range is available at eight showrooms across the country: in Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kochi. Early 2010 will witness the opening of new showrooms in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai (West), Jaipur, Chennai, Ludhiana. Further developments include Lucknow, Coimbatore and Nagpur.

New Audi Logo To Debut At Frankfurt Motor Show
Audi has announced its plans to unveil their updated logo for the first time internationally at the Franfurt Motor show.
The redesigned logo stresses “Vorsprung durch Technik” (Advancement through Technology) and has already made its initial debut at the brand’s 100th anniversary celebrations.
The updated logo with 4 rings in still the visual focus of the new logo but the altered surface and new profile gives it a more contemporary look.
“Vorsprung durch Technik is a clear promise to our customers - and an obligation for all Audi employees to render our design even more innovative, our drive systems even more efficient and our product range even more emotion-packed.” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, a member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales for Audi.
“Audi is the most progressive premium brand,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer. “This orientation to the future is in our genes - and in time for Audi’s 100th anniversary has consequently now become a part of our brand logo.”

The new Audi logo: trade fair debut at the IAA
- 100 years of Audi: Corporate Design further evolved
- New logo now includes brand essence Vorsprung durch Technik
- Four rings take on a new look
- Logo download at www.audi-mediaservices.com/epk/newlogo
Visitors to the 63rd International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main can expect to witness an extraordinary debut at the trade fair from September 15 onward. In addition to the international launch of numerous technical innovations, AUDI AG is also unveiling the further evolution of the four rings at this year’s trade fair stand. Even more progressive and contemporary than its predecessor, the new Audi logo elevates the brand essence to its key message: Vorsprung durch Technik.
“As we see it, Vorsprung durch Technik is a clear promise to our customers - and an obligation for all Audi employees to render our design even more innovative, our drive systems even more efficient and our product range even more emotion-packed,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG.
Audi has made it possible for customers to experience Vorsprung durch Technik firsthand with technical innovations such as quattro all-wheel drive, intelligent aluminum lightweight design and highly efficient diesel technology. For the first time, the brand claim has now been combined with the brand trademark, the four rings, in the various versions of the new logo. The rings are still the visual focus of the new logo, but their altered surface and new profile give them an even more contemporary look.
The new typeface “Audi Type” is also part of Audi’s evolved Corporate Design. It was the result of an international typography competition and has already been in use since the start of the year. Its aim was to enhance the independent character of the Audi typeface - clear, minimalist and technical.
The Audi color code, used in all communication media, has also been further developed and will be used even more stringently with the new Corporate Design. As main color, aluminum silver represents technical innovative power and lightweight design, an Audi core competency and one of the most important future technologies that set the brand apart.
“Audi is the most progressive premium brand,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer. “This orientation to the future is in our genes - and in time for Audi’s 100th anniversary has consequently now become a part of our brand logo.”
Starting in September, the new logo will be used in all communication measures: from classic advertising, publications and Audi press kits to sponsorship and the Audi website. The redesigned logo already made an initial debut at the Audi brand’s 100th anniversary celebrations. The new Audi logo will be used internationally for the first time during its trade fair debut at the IAA. There it will add the crowning touch to the white, red and black AUDI AG exhibition stand, which covers 6,000 square meters and has been designed to reflect Audi’s characteristic “terminal” architecture.
Raging Bull’s Next: Next Gen Murcielago
Auto Express reports that these pictures give us the “best look yet” at how the next generation Murcielago may look when it is released in 2012.
The still unnamed Lambo will be longer and wider (yup you read it right!) and lighter than the current Murcielago. The car will use Audi’s aluminium spaceframe design and combine it with carbon fibre body shell making it lighter and much more rigid. With an expected output of 700 bhp from the 6.0 Litre V12 engine and less weight, the new Murcielago will decimate the 0-100 kph sprint in around 3 seconds!
Design wise the new Lamborghini will combine the best elements from the Gallardo and Reventon up front with a dashing of Estoque at the back. Changes upfront include a pronounced spoiler and fresh new headlamps with multilevel LED lights ala 458 Italia but the biggest changes are at the back. Designers have moved the Murci’s trademark angular exhaust closer to the ground while the new strip like Estoque’esque replace the current squarish units.
Four wheel drive system will be retained to ensure absolute stability under any conditions. It will also be Lamborghini’s first car to make use of efficient technologies like Stop-Start and brake energy regeneration.
The prototypes of the new Lambo have already been spied doing rounds at the Nurburgring track but its unlikely to arrive before 2012. Its also likely to spearhed Lamborghini bosse’s plans to deliver their first ever hybrid by 2015.

2010 Honda Accord Crosstour CUV Revealed
In a bid to widen the appeal of the Accord line-up, Honda has revealed the Accord Crosstour CUV for the North American market. Accord is Honda’s best selling model in USA and the company hopes to attract even buyers who are looking for sedan feel while driving but the versatility on an SUV.
Our concept is to broaden the appeal of the Accord line-up by leveraging traditional Accord strengths of fun-to-drive performance and handling while also adapting to dramatic shifts in the light truck marketplace,” said Erik Berkman, vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
“The Accord Crosstour accomplishes that by offering a modern interpretation of a CUV while integrating the refinement and efficiency of a premium sedan.” he added in the press release.
The Crosstour is based on the Accord and has the same basic profile and family lines but suitably beefed up for the Crossover look which includes a huge front grille and wedge shaped C-pillars. The crossover design features higher seating which gives a commanding view of the road ahead but Honda has also kept the suspension low enough so as not to spoil the dynamics associated with a saloon.
Honda’s hasn’t provided the technical specification of the latest Accord Crosstour which will be revealed in the due course. The Accord Crosstour will be positioned at the top of the Accord family and will go on sale in fall 2009 which is when Honda will give us all the details.

2010 Accord Crosstour Styling Conceals Surprising Versatility
Next evolution of the crossover offers CUV attributes while maintaining a premium sedan feel and a sporty, bold appearance
The all-new 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour evolves the Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) concept by integrating a sleek and aerodynamic shape that blends sporty, low-profile contours with versatile CUV functionality, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.
“Our concept is to broaden the appeal of the Accord line-up by leveraging traditional Accord strengths of fun-to-drive performance and handling while also adapting to dramatic shifts in the light truck marketplace,” said Erik Berkman, vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The Accord Crosstour accomplishes that by offering a modern interpretation of a CUV while integrating the refinement and efficiency of a premium sedan.”
Derived from the Accord Sedan, the Accord Crosstour maximizes car-like ride and refinement, yet maintains capabilities consistent with a CUV’s increased ride height and all-weather potential. The Accord Crosstour’s styling builds on the Accord’s familiar character lines and adds a bolder front grille complemented by a durable lower-body appearance, wedge-shaped C-pillars and an aggressive rear stance. The flowing roofline narrows smoothly into the rear of the vehicle to create an aggressive-looking design, which conceals a unique cargo area that can adapt to large objects that exceed the capacity of a sedan.
“We know SUV buyers like the commanding view of the road that comes with a high eye-point and like the comforts of living with an SUV,” said Berkman. “This vehicle meets the needs of buyers looking for those attributes yet at the same time want an image that is different from a conventional SUV.”
The Accord Crosstour will be positioned at the top of the Accord family when it goes on sale in fall 2009. Additional details will be announced later in the year.

GM CHEVROLET CRUZE COMING IN OCTOBER!
Recession may be the biggest news on the year around the world, but as far as Indian automobile market is concerned, there isnt any as far as new launches are concerned. This has been the year of car launches and we have seen some big launches in the past 7 months which includes, the Fiat Linea, Fiat Grande Punto, Hyundai i20, Maruti Ritz, Maruti Estilo and Toyota Fortuner. Soon to join the launch bandwagon would be GM who have two big launches planned for the year, the all new midsize saloon Chevrolet Cruze and the small car Chevrolet Beat. GM will launch the Chevrolet Cruze in the India in a few weeks time to co-incide with the festive season. The small car Beat will follow soon after the sedan and will provide the much needed sales momentum to GM in the biggest volume segment in India. GM Chevrolet Cruze was first unveiled at the Paris Motor show in October 2009 and is designed and developed to be sold around the world. In India, the Cruze will take on the tough competition from Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla which have the upper midsize segment almost to their own. Internationally, the Cruze comes with 3 engine options starting with the 112 bhp 1.6 Litre 4 cylinder petrol, another 1.8 Litre 140 bhp petrol and the 2.0 Litre turbocharged common rail diesel engine from the Captiva SUV. Its not yet certain which engines will come to India but the diesel under the hood will give the new Chevvy a distinct advantage against its more established rivals. We will have all the details for you once the car is launched in India. Keep coming for more!
HYUNDAI TO LAUNCH ALL NEW SANTRO ON 1ST SEPTEMBER, TO PHASE OUT GETZ BY 2011
Hyundai will launch the revised version of its best seller Santro in the Indian market on September 1st. The launch looks to have been pre-poned due to competition from the just launched Maruti Suzuki Estilo which comes with revised styling and interiors and an all new 1.0 Litre K-Series engine which is more fuel efficient, powerful and also meets the stringent Bharat IV emission norms which will be applicable in all the metros from April 2010. “We will launch a revised version of the Santro on September 1, and an 800 cc car in a few years,” said Hyundai India, Managing Director, H.S. Lheem at the annual convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). The move is typically aggressive Hyundai which doesnt want to give the first mover advantage to the arch rival Maruti Suzuki which commands a huge brand premium in India. “The Getz will be phased out in two years,” he added. source: ibnlive Lheem also said the company will shift some of the production of the i20 model to Europe mid next year due to logistical reasons. The company is expecting better sales in the upcoming festive season. “We expect to sell around 40,000 i-20s this year,” Lheem said. Hyundai is also ramping up the production from two shifts to three for the i20 which will increase the capacity from 2000 units a month to 2500 units a month to meet the increased demand.
HONDA CIVIC FACELIFT COMING IN SEPTEMBER
Honda Civic sales have been on a downward spiral in India. To pent up demand, Honda is gearing up to launch the facelifted version of the Civic in Septmber. The changes are minor with a new front grille which will have sharper edges and a thick chrome bar at the top to give it a wider appearance and more upmarket feel, slightly reprofiled front bumper with wider air intakes, new design alloy wheels and redesigned tail lamps with rectangular internal lens. The insides will get a USB input for the in-car entertainment system and new fabric for the seats. The facelifted Civic will also come with some new colors and slight increase to the price.
Maruti A-Star A new Commercial
Unlike its recent offerings in the Indian market, A-Star hasn’t been a runaway success for Maruti as they would have hoped. The cheeky little car has all the right ingredients though, a peppy fuel efficient engine, cutesy styling and sharp handling and it also comes with all the safety gear if you are ready to pay for it. To pent up demand and strengthen the A-Star brand, Maruti will come up with a new commercial which will go on air very shortly. The new commercial is on the same lines as Bajaj’s Pulsarmania advertisement for its Pulsar motorcycle and features some delightful stunts and some computer graphics… like the image up above! Enjoy the advertisement after the jump and leave us a comment if you liked it. Maruti Suzuki A-Star New Stunts Commercial
2011 HYUNDAI SONATA (I40) REVEALED!
The long wait has finally ended. After almost endless spy shots, renderings andundiguised shoot shots, we finally have the undisguised images of Hyundai’s newest baby, the Sonata (i40), ahead of its korean unveiling which is scheduled for next month. Looking at the recent efforts from the company like the i20, the ix35 (Tuscon) and now the Sonata (i40), you can’t help but appreciate the stylistic beauty of the cars. Yes, Hyundai has finally started getting it right. This is one of the most appealing Hyundai car that I have ever laid my eyes on, fluid lines, coupe like roofline, its all there. Its no wonder then that Hyundai calls this “fluidic” design language and it was first introduced on the ix-concept at the Geneva Motor Show and a few weeks ago as the production ready Tuscon crossover. The latest generation Hyundai Sonata (i40) will come with a series of modern gasoline and diesel engines including the latest 2.2 R-Series diesel which produces a very impressive 204 bhp. The petrol 2.4 Litre 4-cylinder will now come with GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) and deliver an estimated 200 bhp of maximum power. Hyundai will also offer a V6, prudent when you think that this car will compete with the might of Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in some markets. The engines would be mated to either a 6-speed automatic or 5 or 6 speed manual transmissions. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata (i40) will be officially launched in mid-September with Korean sales starting in October. US and Europe sales would begin from early next year and going by the fact that how aggressive Hyundai is in the Indian market, expect the car very soon on our shores as well. Over to you Hyundai.

Spied: 2010 Mercedes Benz C-Class Facelift
Mercedes Benz C-Class will receive its first facelift since its launch in the form of a new 2010 model. The external styling tweaks are extremely subtle and even a trained eye wont be able to spot the differences easily.
There spy shots were clicked when the new C-Class was being loaded into a trailer truck. Although the spy images are of the wagon variant, the sedan will also recive the same changes. What new… well first up is the new design front bumper with reshaped air intakes and integrated LED daytime running lights and new door mirrors. The rear gets slightly reprofiled LED ligts and thats about it!
Along with the 2010 facelift, Mercedes is also expected to reveal new trim options and greener engine lineup with tweaks to the engine management systems.

Ford To Launch Facelifted Endeavour
While Toyota Fortuner may have stole all the limelight for the past few days in the ever increasing big SUV market, Ford is no mood to let the new comer take away sales from the erstwhile champion Endeavour.
To counter the newest Toyota, Ford will soon launch the facelifted Endeavour in the Indian market soon. The new Endeavour comes with an entirely new front fascia with high mounted headlights and a new grille. The butch looks of the current version have been blunted to an extent by the facelift but the new front end is still full of attitude and is expected to go down well with a larger set of buyers some of whom found the looks of the current version too butch and in your face.
The new front end treatment also makes it look less boxy, in turn giving it a more modern profile. Ford hasnt touched the rear end styling which means it still has the the high mounted stop lamps and the rear wheel mounted on the rear door for that signature SUV look.
Mechanically, the engine remains the same which is a good news. The 3.0 litre variable geometry turbo common rail diesel engine is a torque monster and produces 10% more torque compared to the Fortuner and almost similar maximum power. The engine will now be mated to an optional 5-Speed automatic transmissions for city dwellers who want ease of driving. The new facelifted Endeavour will also come with an improved rear differential and shift on fly four wheel drive to improve the overall driving experience.
Dissapointingly though, the rear suspension is still leaf spring which has no place on a 21st centuary SUV.
What remains to be seen is if the buyers will go for the new kid on the block or the grand daddy? The first signs are ominous… let the SUV battle begin!

Official: Mini Coupe Concept Revealed!
BMW Mini has released the first official pictures of the new Coupe Concept on the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of the brand.
The new Coupe Concept to be unveiled at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show is unlike the original Coupe of the sixties which simply had a fastback replacement for the standard roof. Other sports coupe design elements include massive wheels, sporty looking front and rear bumper and dual centrally placed exhaust pipes.
The interiors come with leather upholstery, carbon fiber trim and two Chronoswiss clocks of which one is the usual clock while the other one is dedicated lap timer.
Propulsion duties are handled by a 1.6 Litre turbocharged 4 cylinder petrol engine with 211 bhp of maximum power and 260 nm of torque. The coupe concept also features an overboost function which can deliver a maximum of 280 nm of torque giving swifter acceleration. The MINI Coupé Concept therefore represents the ideal of a car destined in every respect to offer a thrilling experience and make every journey a truly unique thrill.
The MINI Coupé Concept brings together a wide range of features for a truly sporting and ambitious style of motoring. Limited to two seats and following a philosophy of consistent lightweight construction, the car clearly meets all the requirements made of a particularly active and dynamic coupé. Compact dimensions, perfect axle load distribution and a low centre of gravity offer ideal conditions for enhancing the agility typical of MINI to a level never seen before.
Through its design alone, the MINI Coupé Concept brings out all the thrill of individual mobility and the focus on pure driving pleasure. Powerful proportions and dynamic design language evoke a sense of desire and strong appeal, the MINI Coupé Concept offering a particularly undiluted expression of the brand through its sporting and unconventional stance on the road.
The MINI Coupé Concept: an invitation to enjoy spontaneous mobility.
With the growing model portfolio, the popularity of the MINI brand has also grown consistently in recent years. The MINI has moved beyond the restraints of urban mobility, opening up additional options and winning over new target groups. And MINI allows you to enjoy spontaneous mobility, sporting and agile handling and unmistakable style on virtually every occasion.
The current models in the range already meet the most varied demands. As individual characters in their own right, the MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible all offer a unique rendition of the driving experience so typical of the brand. And now the MINI Coupé Concept brings out driving pleasure in its most concentrated form, extreme lightweight technology making this two-seater particularly agile and unusually efficient. At the same time the low roofline, the precisely defined spoiler edge at the rear and other aerodynamic features enhance the car’s performance to an even higher standard. So that in its design and in the use of high-performance drivetrain technology, the MINI Coupé Concept offers ideal conditions as a compact sports car in the premium segment.
This two-seater is designed to accommodate even the most powerful engine currently available in the MINI - and with the 1.6-litre twin-scroll turbocharged power unit carried over from the MINI John Cooper Works, the MINI Coupé Concept offers truly outstanding performance. Maximum output is 155 kW/211 hp, peak torque 260 Newton-metres/192 lb-ft increasing through the Overboost function for a short while to an even more substantial 280 Newton-metres/206 lb-ft. And now the MINI Coupé Concept offers everything it takes to exceed even the supreme performance of the MINI John Cooper Works with this unique power unit.
At the same time this concept car clearly follows the BMW Group’s EfficientDynamics development strategy. More driving pleasure, lower emissions - the MINI Coupé Concept lives out this philosophy expressed by MINI as MINIMALISM in a particularly attractive manner.
Fifty years of MINI: a vision of tomorrow marking an anniversary of today.
Fifty years after the launch of the classic Mini, the appeal of the brand is greater than ever before, with the model range exuding sheer fascination wherever you go. And now, in the anniversary year of the brand, MINI is bringing together this unique tradition and the successful model range offered today with even greater creativity and technical innovation for a truly promising future.
The MINI Coupé Concept is a further milestone in this ongoing development of the brand. The car takes up elementary strengths of the MINI and, through its modern technology and an innovative body concept, offers new standards and characteristics never seen before. So that the MINI Coupé Concept offers many new highlights in adding yet a further character to the existing model range.
Exterior design: the look typical of MINI but with individual character.
The body design of the MINI Coupé Concept also bridges the gap from the earliest days of the Mini’s history all the way to the more distant future of the brand, emphasising the unique nature of the concept as well as its full membership in the MINI family. At the same time the individual and emotional design language arouses the expectation of a particularly thrilling experience on the road.
Especially at the front end of the car a number of icons typical of the brand, as well as the design style so characteristic of MINI, all come together to create a strong family resemblance. In addition, the individual look of the MINI Coupé Concept comes out also in the side view of the car as well as in the design of the rear end.
This unique new two-seater measures 3,714 millimetres (146.2″) in length and 1,683 millimetres (66.3″) in width. Height is 1,356 millimetres (53.4″). Through these dimensions and its athletic proportions alone, the MINI Coupé Concept stands out from the beginning as a compact and muscular sports machine.
The typical MINI look in particularly sporting style.
The new concept car carries over the unmistakable front end look from the four-seater MINI. Smoothly balanced contours on the engine lid characterised by wide and sweeping radii, the large headlights, the homogenous shape of the radiator grille and the wide lower air intake give each model that unique look, openness and charm so typical of the brand. Through the greater rake of the windscreen on the MINI Coupé Concept, the car looks even more striking and dynamic, the low and streamlined body proving clearly that the MINI Coupé Concept is a particularly outstanding performer.
The hexagon radiator grille and the large round headlights are unmistakable design features re-interpreting the front view of the classic Mini in particularly modern style. The direction indicators are integrated in the headlights, just above the innovative three-dimensional surrounds for the positioning lights and the foglamps. The entire front air dam has been adjusted to the sporting look of the car, standing out even wider and more striking than before.
The chrome radiator grille on the MINI Coupé Concept is the same as on the MINI Cooper S. The inner section in the grille is however finished with bars in body colour creating a clear sign of distinction at very first sight from the other members of the MINI family. The bonnet stripes also extend into the radiator grille to provide an even more sporting and dynamic touch.
With its very dynamic curvature and the stylised opening, bearing testimony to the power of the engine lurking within, the front lid likewise comes in the same look as on the particularly powerful versions of the MINI.
Individual roofline as a sign of sporting presence.
The side view of the MINI Coupé Concept also brings together features typical of the MINI family and new highlights in design to form a fascinating whole. The front side panels, for example, come straight from the MINI Convertible. The body joint forming the diagonal line characteristic of every MINI along the front lid and the surrounds on the front side indicators bearing out the style of the MINI Cooper S again provide an unmistakable sign of distinction with historic roots - here the classic Mini had a visible welding seam along the body.
The familiarity in design resulting from these features forms an attractive contrast to the far greater rake of the A-pillars leading into the brand-new, sweeping line of the roof.
Large wheels and a high waistline already give the MINI, the MINI Clubman and the MINI Convertible a particularly powerful and sporting look, with the black strip around the lower section of the body underlining this compact appearance and short body overhangs front and rear emphasising the athletic stature of the car and bearing testimony to that typical go-kart feeling at very first sight.
All this now comes out even more convincingly in the MINI Coupé Concept, also through the unique flow of the roofline. The glazed section of the passenger cell referred to as the greenhouse, for example, is much lower and even more dynamic than on the brand’s “regular” models.
Another feature of the MINI Coupé Concept is the strongly inclined windscreen merging gently into the roof. At the rear the roofline initially moving straight back above the heads of the driver and front passenger flows on into the sturdy C-pillar. The entire roof with all its contours thus comes in a bridge shape quite unmistakable and featured for the first time on the MINI, made up of a strong rear cornerstone formed by the C-pillar and the almost filigree structure above the passenger cell.
The C-pillar is a strong visual expression of the particularly solid and torsionally rigid body structure providing not only superior occupant safety, but also the agility typical of MINI in fast manoeuvres. The C-pillar very powerful in design serves at the same time to guide your perspective towards the rear end of the car, while the side view of the MINI Coupè Concept forms a very strong and convincing wedge shape created by the roofline tapering out to the rear and the waistline rising up slightly in typical MINI style.
All this gives the MINI Coupé Concept a forward-moving impression right from the start, the car clearly expressing its power and muscle even at a standstill. Through its design alone, therefore, the MINI Coupé Concept authentically visualises sporting qualities of the highest standard.
Striking contours and smooth flow of air ensured by the roof spoiler and the rear spoiler edge.
The rear-end design of the MINI Coupé Concept consistently follows the need to optimise the flow of air in the interest of both driving dynamics and efficiency. The principle of “form follows function” so essential to MINI, the look and design of various body elements, fully reflects the characteristic features and qualities of the car. Through its design alone, therefore, the MINI Coupé Concept clearly confirms its sporting potential in a particularly credible and convincing manner.
The rear spoiler with its wing profile at the same level as the C-pillar also makes a particularly effective contribution in guiding the air along the rear end of the MINI Coupé Concept. This large air guidance element spans the entire width of the roof, increasing aerodynamic downforce on the rear axle.
Tapering down elegantly, the rear window on this unique two-seater merges into a short and low rear end with staged contours in typical coupé design. Again, this follows the overriding objective to ensure an optimum flow of air without any turbulence harming the car’s aerodynamics - which is also why the air spoiler on the rear panel is appropriately sharp and clear in its profile.
Beneath the air spoiler at the rear the overall look and design of the MINI Coupé Concept follows the typical philosophy of the brand. Horizontal lines running parallel to one another emphasise the wide track of the car, the body growing wider from top to bottom in cascading style highlighting the muscular stance of the car resting on its wheels in that characteristic style.
The rear light clusters in upright arrangement and surrounded by a wide chrome frame are also typical of the brand. The rear air dam on the MINI Coupé Concept, in turn, comes with a diffuser split up into two sections and ensuring a smooth, swirl-free flow of air beneath the car.
Impressively functional: wide-opening tailgate, generous luggage space.
The tailgate on the MINI Coupé Concept is yet another highlight of the car. Deliberately foregoing the rear seat bench, this unique two-seater offers lots of additional space for taking along all kinds of luggage.
Luggage capacity is 250 litres or 8.8 cu ft. To use this space most conveniently, the rear end of the MINI Coupé Concept comes with a large and wide-opening tailgate. Hinged above the roof spoiler, the entire tailgate including the rear window swings up gracefully, offering convenient access to the generous luggage space behind the rear seats of the car. And thanks to the low loading sill, accessing the luggage compartment with even heavy and bulky objects is significantly easier.
The complete design of the rear end with its large tailgate is yet another example of the functional design so typical of MINI. All options offered through the concept of the car are optimised to the highest standard through carefully thought-out solutions and a good overall balance. Indeed, this principle already to be admired on the brand’s existing models, for example through the easy-load function on the MINI Convertible, makes a significant contribution to the overall substance of the car. The result is a wide range of innovative solutions quite unique in the market, emphasising the premium character of the MINI brand.
On the MINI Coupé Concept this philosophy is borne out by yet another distinctive feature providing extra space and practical value: The bulkhead between the passenger and the luggage compartments comes with a lockable opening. The through-loading provided in this way, quite unusual on a two-seater coupe, gives the driver and passenger direct access even while driving to travel items they are taking along in the luggage compartment. So that bags with, say, beverages, a music CD or maps are stowed away safely but always within easy reach.
Interior: sports car ambience with an exclusive range of colours and materials.
The MINI Coupé Concept combines the vision of a compact sports car with thrilling agility, on the one hand, and the individual flair and style of the MINI, on the other. Through its entire concept, the car is perfectly designed to offer concentrated driving pleasure of the highest standard. This is borne out not only through the extroverted exterior in its fascinating, sporting look, but also through the interior conceived from the start for active motoring.
Wide-opening doors give the driver and passenger convenient access to the interior, where they enjoy sports seats with strongly contoured side supports for a secure seating position even in particularly fast bends. A three-spoke leather sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons enables the driver to steer precisely into bends and control the audio or communication functions with maximum ease. All other control units, in turn, are arranged ergonomically on the dashboard, taking their frequency of use into account.
The breakdown of the cockpit, the dashboard and centre console again follows that special interior design so typical of MINI. Horizontal lines and air vents placed far to the outside emphasise the sheer width of the instrument panel and, at the same time, the generous style of the interior, the slender centre console giving the driver and passenger maximum legroom. The structure of the door linings so typical of the brand, finally, has also been re-interpreted, with the elliptic main element now completely closed in.
The MINI Coupé Concept also comes with a large rev counter directly behind the steering wheel, while the speedometer is part of the central instrument in the upper section of the dashboard. This circular instrument well known as the Center Speedo also houses the audio system as well as the optional entertainment and navigation functions.
Two Chronoswiss clocks to the right and left of the rev counter provide a close link to earlier concept cars by MINI, bridging the gap between the analogue age of the classic Mini and the digital age of the MINI. One clock is a purpose-built stopwatch for taking lap times, the second clock shows the time in classic style.
The colours and materials featured inside the MINI Coupé Concept symbolise the classic sportiness of the car. Like the dashboard, the roof lining of this unprecedented two-seater comes in black providing a calm atmosphere just right for concentrating on driving conditions and essential requirements. Black trim bars combined with a carbon interior trim strip, finally, further enhance this purist look.
Lightweight construction and modern suspension technology providing a new feeling of go-kart driving.
The MINI Coupé Concept is definitely a MINI and definitely a sports car. The particular charm of this combination results from both the drivetrain and the suspension technology already featured in the current production models, as well as the special highlights of this two-seater concept car.
Over and above their body design, the MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible already set the standard today for agility and driving pleasure in their respective segments. Powerful engines and suspension technology quite superior in the small car segment then ensure a truly unique driving experience. Front-wheel drive, powerful disc brakes on all four wheels, the front axle with McPherson spring struts and a centrally guided rear axle with aluminium longitudinal arms and anti-roll bars set the foundation for uniquely safe and agile handling.
EPS Electronic Power Steering with speed-related power assistance, finally, ensures precise manoeuvring round bends and gives the driver exact feedback at all times on road and driving conditions. At the same time on-demand management of steering assistance serves to maximise the car’s efficiency.
The MINI Coupé Concept offers ideal conditions for raising the go-kart feeling created by the car’s drivetrain and suspension technology to an even higher standard. Its entire construction is based on a lightweight concept reducing weight particularly where it really counts for even greater agility. As an example, this two-seater comes with an aluminium roof not only optimising the overall weight of the car, but also lowering the car’s centre of gravity for a significant reduction of body movement and optimised driving behaviour.
Since lower weight also means greater efficiency, the MINI Coupé Concept again offers the option to combine even greater driving pleasure with fuel consumption and CO2 emissions reduced to a minimum as an important sign of our times.
Traditional values, modern quality, progressive concept.
Sporting success and agile handling of the highest standard are significant highlights in the history of MINI now going back five decades - and both factors have made a fundamental contribution to the ongoing popularity of this small premium car.
Three overall wins in the Monte Carlo Rally and the concept of driving pleasure expressed so clearly by the car’s go-kart feeling definitely confirm the sporting potential of this small compact both back then and today. The anniversary year is therefore the ideal time to present the MINI Coupé Concept as the vision of an uncompromisingly active sports car.
Another concept car presented even before the re-launch of the MINI brand proves that this philosophy has always fuelled the creativity of the MINI’s designers: The MINI Concept Monte Carlo presented in 1997 was a two-seater with a 160-hp mid-mounted engine. Through its design alone, this concept car already came with a wide range of features destined to be taken up again by the first MINI, short body overhangs front and rear, round headlights and the re-interpretation of the hexagon radiator grille providing an outlook at important styling elements on the production model to follow later. With its extremely powerful body and direct references to motorsport, the MINI Concept Monte Carlo also made a clear pledge to the rally history of the brand.
Now the MINI Coupé Concept, through its unique look, takes up the almost aggressive and extroverted appearance of that former concept car, at the same time providing a new link between the history, the present and the future of the brand. It takes up traditional values of the MINI brand and combines them with the most advanced technologies to offer a fascinating vision of how the MINI model family may continue.
Once again, therefore, MINI is following the needs and wishes of new target groups fully appreciative of the individual style of the brand and associating this character with clearly defined product features. The MINI Coupé Concept addresses the motorist thrilled by that unique combination of driving pleasure, lifestyle, and premium quality so typical of MINI and, at the same time, looking for sporting driving qualities of an even higher standard.
