Tesla has long intended to build a Roadster which is more powerful than the standard car with more performance and has now released new images of its Roadster Sport.
The Roadster Sport has 15% more peak power than the standard Roadster with its 248 bhp electric engine which cuts the 0-100 kmph acceleration time to 3.7 seconds. The standard Roadster does the same sprint in 3.9 seconds. Other go faster bit include hand wound stator and increased winding density for lower resistence and higher peak torque, high performance Yokohama tyres, improved suspension and adjustable anti-roll bars that can be tuned to driver’s preference. The engine still sends the power to the rear wheels and revvs to a heady 14000 rpm redline.
On the outside the Roadster Sport makes its sporting pretensions clear with carbon fiber hood louvres and a rear spolier. The insides now have a push button transmission selector in place of the earlier aluminium shift knob and a central touch screen display that displays estimated range along with the total number of barrels of oil saved over a fossil fuel powered vehicle.
Tesla plans to take orders of the new model from today and has priced the Roadster Sport at $128,500 in the United States and €112,000 (excluding VAT) in Europe. Deliveries are slated to start in June 2010 and anyone who has already ordered the standard Roadster can also upgrade it to Sport.
